Based in Chapters XXV and XXVI of “Don Quijote de la Mancha” by Miguel de Cervantes, the opera “El Retablo de Maese Pedro” of Manuel de Falla is a milestone in the history of Giramundo. This play was the first experience intended for grown-ups, following four montagens for children and anticipating characteristics of “Cobra Norato” (1979), the great success of critic and public. “El Retablo” is Giramundo’s first experience with big-sized puppets, handled by three puppeteers, like the traditional Japanese Bunraku. The show mixed different handling techniques, creating a hybrid scene with major impact. The performance had an orchestra and live singers, making up a complex ensemble unprecedent in the Brazilian puppetry scene in the Seventies of last Century.
